About Upgrab

Last updated:

Upgrab is a small set of colour tools that load instantly, work in any modern browser, and never ask you to sign up for anything.

1. Why it exists

Most colour work is small: grab a shade, nudge it, copy the code, get back to what you were doing. Doing that shouldn't mean launching a design application, creating an account or waiting for a page full of scripts to settle.

This started as an internal utility for exactly that, and it stayed deliberately narrow. One page, a handful of tools, and reference pages for individual colours that load fast enough to be worth linking to.

2. What you get

  • A colour picker with a saturation plane, hue and alpha control, and a screen eyedropper where the browser supports one.
  • A gradient builder with draggable stops, linear and radial modes, per-stop opacity and copyable CSS.
  • An image eyedropper that reads pixels in your browser — images are never uploaded.
  • A page for every colour, with all eight formats, tint and shade ladders, six harmony schemes and WCAG contrast ratios.
  • A written column explaining how colour formats, contrast and gradients actually work.

3. How the numbers are produced

Conversions follow the standard formulas rather than approximations: the sRGB transfer function for linearisation, a D65 white point for XYZ, and the CIE definitions for LAB and LCH. Contrast ratios use the WCAG 2 relative-luminance formula. The articles are checked against the same code that powers the colour pages, so a figure quoted in an article is a figure the tools produce.

4. Privacy, plainly

There is no account, so there is nothing to leak. Your colour history and theme preference live in your browser's local storage and are never sent to us. Images you sample are read locally and discarded when you close the tab.

5. How it stays free

The site is funded by advertising. Ads are kept out of the tools themselves and are labelled where they appear. No article is sponsored and there are no affiliate links — advertising has no influence on what gets written.

6. Who runs it

Upgrab is an independent project, not a company product. Colour writing is published under the pen name Mical Arden, which the author page explains in full. Messages sent to us are read by a person.
